Munhakdongne plays a leading role in exporting not only Korean literature, but also books of various fields. Through a local scout in New York, we are directly introduced to foreign writers, and are introducing books of Korean authors. Since Munhakdongne took part in the Frankfurt Book Fair as a guest of honor in 2005, we are maintaining a stable network with foreign agencies and publishing companies through annual book fairs, fellowship programs, business trips, and copyrights workshops.
In the year 2020, more than 100 books of Munhakdongne Publishing Group were exported overseas. 『Tangerine Green』, a recent work of Cho Nam-joo, was sold to six countries after a heated auction, and 『The Plotters』 by Kim Un-su was sold to 26 countries. 『Shoko’s Smile』 by Choi Eun-young met readers of eight countries including the United States and England. Other works of female authors, including Chung Se-rang, Kang Hwa-gil, Baik Sou-linne, Lim Sol-ah, are actively being introduced. Books of various fields by authors such as Lee Byung-ryul, Kim Ran-do, Moon You-suk, Namkoong Ihn, Ha Jung-woo, and Yozoh have met foreign readers and are waiting for more.
Munhakdongne Korean Literature Collection was released in commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of Munhakdongne’s establishment. The main selection criterion for this collection was based on the book’s success of making Korean literature shine over the 20 years with Munhakdongne and its readers. This collection will continue to expand with a variety of genres and authors of all generations and it will bear the role of connecting the uniqueness of Korean literature and the universal characteristics of world literature. From this collection, Korea will find the past, the present, and the future of modern literature.
Beginning with Leo Tolstoy’s ANNA KARENINA to Herman Melville’s MOBY DICK, we have a selection of 210 books and more to go for our World Classics Collection. The series includes eternal classics such as George Orwell’s 1984, Goethe’s FAUST, and Albert Camus’s THE STRANGER, as well as masterpieces written by Nobel Prize-winning authors like Mo Yan’s THIRTEEN STEPS, Oe Kenzaburo’s THE BEAUTIFUL ANNABEL LEE WAS CHILLED AND KILLED, Elfriede Jelinek’s THE PIANO TEACHER, J.M.G. Le Clezio’s THE GOLDEN FISH, and Mario Vargas Llosa’s THE FEAST OF THE GOAT. We also have notable contemporary fiction in this collection, books that have been great inspirations to the world from various countries. With our modern editing skills and smart design senses, we will continue to add book by book, carefully selecting pieces, and building a collection that will be remembered for its richness and fine quality.
